Passports with Purpose Heads to Zambia and Offers to Take Readers Along

Passports with Purpose (PwP) is an annual fundraiser uniting the travel blogging community around a common cause.  From November 30 – December 16, 2011, over 100 travel bloggers world-wide offered prizes, wrote posts, and encouraged their readers to donate money to build two libraries in the African country of Zambia.  More than $89,000 USD was raised in the effort.  The libraries are now complete, it’s time for the Passports with Purpose organizers to travel to Zambia for the ribbon cutting ceremony, and they’d like to take us along.  Continue reading to find out how you can join in and follow the trip.

The 2011 Passports with Purpose fundraiser for Zambia was in partnership with Room to Read, promoting literacy and reading among children in developing countries through its library program.  Room to Read began building libraries in Zambia in 2009 to address the challenge of overcrowded schools and the need for more classroom space.  Buildings are constructed in collaboration with the community and, once built, fills the room with child-friendly books and materials, and provides librarian training and professional development to integrate the library and its resources into the classrooms.

More than 135 travel bloggers participated in the 2011 Passports with Purpose fundraiser by writing about the effort or procuring prizes such as vacation packages, electronics, gear, and travel experiences.  Each $10 tax-deductible donation entered a person to win one of the prizes.

As the founders of Passports with Purpose prepare for their trip to Zambia, they’d like to bring us along with them.  They’re asking for postcards and pictures for a photo album they’ll deliver to the Zambian community.  They want to show the children the people from all over the world who worked together to make the library a reality.  So, if you helped by making a cash donation, providing a prize, or spreading the word on your blog or social media please participate and send in a postcard or picture.  Here are the details:

  • Send a postcard (or postcard sized picture) to the address below.  It can be from your hometown, a trip that meant a lot to you, or a picture of you doing something you love.  Don’t forget to write a note on the back!
  • Passports with Purpose would also like to post some of the photos online.  Therefore, please indicate if you do not wish to share in that way.
  • Put your picture or postcard in the mail by May 1 – you can send it to: Passports with Purpose, P.O. Box 16102, Seattle WA 98116.  Make sure you allow enough time for it to be received by May 3rd.

You can also follow along with the trip to Zambia online.  They promise to post pictures and stories from the journey on their blogFacebook Page, and Twitter Account.  Last year I discovered Passports with Purpose as I was creating my blog before Adventures by Daddy’s official launch.  I participated in a small way with a donation, and my postcard’s in the mail.  However, I promise in 2012 to be a more active participant of this very worthy fundraiser.   For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, from Dad’s perspective, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on twitter and “like” our facebook page too.
