New Disney, Pixar, Marvel and More Playthings at New York Toy Fair 2013

For four days this past week, the 110th annual New York Toy Fair filled the Javits Center in New York City.  Thousands of toy makers, manufacturers and marketers braved the Nemo blizzard to showcase their goods and talents, entertaining buyers and press alike.  There were dolls, action figures, plushes, crafts, books, puzzles, games, collectibles, apparel, manipulatives, and more.  Adventures by Daddy was granted access to this industry-only play date and we’re pleased to share with you here some of our favorite items from the show.  Continue reading for some of our favorites including toys from the upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful, Iron Man 3, Monsters University, and The Lone Ranger films.  Make sure you continue to the end of the post for a full gallery of all the photos from New York Toy Fair.

DISNEY

There were loads of Disney items from various vendors.  I’ve split some of items out by brand out at the end of this article, but will highlight some of the other items here:

Roommates® Peel and Stick Wall Decals are great – fun for a kid’s room or playroom

I would have loved this backpack when I was in school!

Roxo has come up with an alternative to the Chamilia line for kids.  They’ve created charms that fit onto rubber bracelet bands, which are slightly smaller and thinner than the ubiquitous charity bands, unfortunately, so you won’t be able to repurpose those.  The charms are adorable and come in a variety of themes, including alma maters, zodiac symbols, NASCAR, and more.

Lee Publications has introduced a number of travel-sized and travel-friendly puzzles and toys, including invisible ink books, magic painting books, and magnetic toys (dress your princess or superhero in an easily stowed metal tin).

Wonder Forge has a new line of Disney games and crafts for the Princesses (including Sofia).

New York Toy Fair 2013

I was most intrigued by the Eye Found It game board.  It’s longer than I am tall and includes scenes from many different Disney movies and shows.

There were many more items at the show.  I even found 3D puzzle kits for Cinderella Castle and Mickey’s house.

Are you a Mr. Potato Head fan?  Check out these new outfits.

Jakks Pacific has a full line of dolls and costumes for various Disney properties, including the upcoming Iron Man 3, Oz the Great and Powerful, and the Disney Fairies

Jakks Pacific also has an adorable set of micro Smurfs (the second picture has my finger in it for scale)

Klutz, the crafts books publisher, has quite a selection of Disney and Star Wars books, but what captured my attention was the Toolbox Jewelry Kit.  What a great idea for a daddy/daughter activity!

New York Toy Fair 2013

Despicable Me 2

Several vendors had Despicable Me 2 items on display, but my favorite is the Minion View Finder!  Check the gallery to see Hello Kitty, Spiderman and Darth Vader View Finders, as well.

THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS

Mrs. Frizzle was on hand at New York Toy Fair to demonstrate the new Magic School Bus science kits.  The Polymer kit she’s holding has enough materials for 30 students, but I think it would be a great kids’ party activity, too!

Once Upon A Zombie

One of the most eye-catching displays (it stopped me in my tracks, literally) was the Once Upon a Zombie dolls.  The Snow White cut-out caught my attention first.

When I entered the booth, I was ushered to an alcove that contained the dolls themselves.

New York Toy Fair 2013

These are not Disney dolls and are not Disney-related, in any way.  These are classic fairy tale characters that have been zombiefied.  My favorite is the Snow White doll, of course (and, also, somewhat surprisingly).  I look forward to seeing where this line of characters is going.

FUNKO

Funko has created quite a stir among collectors.  Their POP! figurines feature some of pop cultures greatest icons, from classic movies to classic cartoons and comics, from rock stars to television and movie stars, and everything in between.

I found the Mickey Mouse Pop! in 3 different sizes, as well as characters from some of my favorite Disney movies.

Two upcoming Disney films, Monsters University and Iron Man 3, are well represented, as well, in Pop! and other collectibles.

Besides the Pop! figures, Funko has introduced Cupcake Keepsakes, plushes, and even activity kits.

There are a lot more Funko collectibles featured in the photo gallery below; check them out and tell us what you think.

MATTEL

Mattel took over the 4th floor gallery of the Javits Center with an impressive display of new toys.  Mattel has teamed up with Disney for a number of wonderful new toys.  There are new Cars MicroDrifters that can be raced from Radiator Springs to the World Grand Prix.

Disney’s Planes is represented by both a radio-controlled car (you wear the wings on your hand and guide Dusty’s action by your own movement)

and by a race backdrop where die cast models of the Planes planes fly, dip and barrel roll to victory.

The Ultimate Dream Castle has a room for each of the Disney Princesses, including a slide of long blonde hair from the tower to the ground for Rapunzel.  The wallpaper in each room acts as a sort of QR code that you can scan with your iPad for activities relating to the princess whose room you scanned.  The clock on the front can be scanned for a fireworks show over your very own castle, too.

New York Toy Fair 2013

Sophia the First has her very own castle, too.

New York Toy Fair 2013

She also comes in a larger-sized doll with some animal friends that she can talk to with her specially-coded amulet.

Minnie Cheerleader shakes her pom-poms and cheers for Mickey (Oh, Mickey…)

Fisher Price’s Disney Princess Klip Klop Stable lets the Little People princesses move around with just a little nudge from you.

Mattel also carries the Thomas the Tank Engine line, including the wood-track trains and a series of toys dedicated to the new Thomas the Tank Engine King of the Railway DVD.

Other TV tie-ins include Octonauts, Mike the Knight, Bubble Guppies, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and more.

Hot Wheels has a new Triple Track play set (with an iPad stand for adding themes), Car Maker (with a hot lock that prevents the newly-molded car from being touched before it has cooled) and CarCade (a perfect way to repurpose those old cars that aren’t played with much anymore).

Barbie has a new dress!  It’s digital and programmable, so you can change her dress to your own design.

New York Toy Fair 2013

Barbie also has a new way to color her hair.

New York Toy Fair 2013

Monster High has a new movie coming out: 13 Wishes.  A new line of dolls, clothes, and other merchandise are coming out, too, including the Color Me Creepy Design Chamber that lets you change the color of the dolls limbs and hair.

LEGO

There are number of movie tie-ins from Lego.  My favorites are the Lone Ranger kits, especially the Tonto minifig!

There are also new LEGO Star Wars kits (Chronicles of Yoda); Lord of the Rings (the hobbit legs are shorter than the regular minifig legs!); and Iron Man 3 kits (which we can’t show you, but looked really cool!).

The Duplo line has Jake and the Neverland Pirates and new Princess kits, too.

The LEGO team had also created a giant music box that visitors could turn themselves.  If you turned it at the right speed, it played the Star Wars theme and the drum itself is a serious of Star Wars scenes recreated in Lego bricks.

New York Toy Fair 2013

New York Toy Fair was a HUUUUUUGE show, covering more than 2 full floors of the Javits Center, and I saw a lot more than has been mentioned in this post.
