St. Patrick’s Day at Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World

Pleasure Island turned into the Emerald Isle for St. Patrick’s Day at Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World.  I happened to be in town for St. Patrick’s Day, with no plans, so decided to check it out.  The St. Patrick’s Day celebration spread across Downtown Disney’s Pleasure Island and featured dancers, musicians, traditional Irish food, and of course pints of good ole’ Irish beer, green beer, and Irish whiskey too.  Continue reading for a photo tour of St. Patrick’s Day at Downtown Disney, and I’ll let you know what I thought.

Entering Pleasure Island you were welcomed by stilt-walkers in Leprechaun outfits.  Hmmmm, I always thought Leprechauns were little people.  Giant Leprechauns?  I’m not sure what to make of them.

There were also cast members passing out strings of green beads.  [Note: she was mobbed.  People, be reasonable, they are just beads.]

You didn’t need to worry if you didn’t have dining reservations because throughout Pleasure Island there were plenty of kiosks set up selling food and beverages, a mini Irish Food and Wine Beer festival if you will.  Of course the green beer, yards of beer, and Guinness were all popular sellers.

Not surprisingly, Downtown Disney’s Irish Pub Raglan Road was party central for this St. Patrick’s Day Celebration.  A festival so big Raglan Road dubbed it… Mighty.

This was the area that had the largest congestion of people.  Bands and performers played outside; visitors milled about sipping beer, watching the entertainment, and enjoying the atmosphere.

Bands and musicians were scheduled from 11:30am – until late in the evening (actually early morning hours), but you didn’t need to crowd around Raglan Road to enjoy the entertainment.  The nice thing about this festival was performers played all across Pleasure Island, and there was always a musical act to enjoy somewhere.

And it wouldn’t be a Disney event without the merchandise.  I think I may go to the outlet store and see if I can pick up any of these St. Patrick’s Day specific items possibly marked down later in the week.

Overall what did I think of St. Patrick’s Day at Downtown Disney?  I thought it was well done.  If this was a festival in my hometown, it would have been packed.  Now would I organize my entire family vacation around this St. Patrick’s Day celebration?  No.  However, there were tons of musicians and free entertainment, and you didn’t need to spend one penny if you didn’t want to eat or drink.  A great way to get some Disney entertainment without spending a whole lot of money.  I commend Disney for putting this together.  Manage your expectations, don’t think this is going to be the most incredible St. Patrick’s Day celebration in all the universe, but accept it as a nice, different, free festival, and you will have a great time (assuming Disney puts on the event in the future).

So were any of you able to attend the St. Patrick’s Day at Downtown Disney party?  If so, what did you think?  I’d love to read your thoughts and opinions too.  For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on twitter and “like” our facebook page too.
