In addition, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club is announcing two additional presentations. As we near the award-winning film’s 50th anniversary, Disney Legend and Walt Disney Archives Chief Archivist Emeritus Dave Smith will host “Behind the Scenes of Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins.” Guests will learn the complete story of how Walt Disney first discovered the book, worked on the script with author P.L. Travers, brought in the Sherman Brothers to write a memorable score, selected an unforgettable cast, oversaw actual filming, and celebrated at a gala Hollywood premiere.
During “Secrets of ‘The Lost Chords,’” Grammy Award-winning producer and resident Disney Music historian, Randy Thornton will reveal some of the secrets behind Disney’s “lost” songs written for classic Disney films by legendary Disney composers (such as the Sherman Brothers) that were essentially lost for decades—until now. Disney Artist and Historian Stacia Martin will present “Sounds Delightful: An Illustrated Audio Adventure,” which will take guests on an entertaining trip across the decades via vintage Disney Vinyl Recordings from her extensive personal collection. While at the Citizenship pavilion, guests can share what inspires them to create a brighter tomorrow at the “Be Inspired” photo booth. Fans can also boost their Disney Citizenship I.Q. and win prizes by participating in a virtual scavenger hunt that will lead them through the Expo in search of fun facts. The scavenger hunt will be part of the D23 Expo app, available later this month in the iTunes and Google Play stores.
Editor’s personal note: my daughters participated in the Disney VoluntEARS experience at the 2011 D23 Expo, and making care packages for our soldiers was one of the most memorable experiences for them during the event.

ESPN FILMS TO PRESENT A SNEAK PREVIEW OF THE ’99ers FROM THE “NINE FOR IX” SERIES
The ’99ers is a documentary about the 1999 Women’s World Cup Soccer Team, and the exclusive film screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Erin Leyden and producer Julie Foudy on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30pm. During her 17 years on the U.S. women’s national soccer team, Julie Foudy won two World Cups and three Olympic medals (two gold, one silver), and served as captain for 13 years.
The world of women’s sports was kicked upside down on July 10, 1999. Before a sold-out crowd of more than 90,000 at the Rose Bowl and an estimated 40 million Americans watching on television, the women’s soccer team reached a cultural and athletic pinnacle with its penalty kick shootout victory over China to win the Women’s World Cup. As part of ESPN Films’ new Nine for IX series, The ’99ers explores the story behind this incredible team.
The ’99ers is told through the voice of Foudy, a longtime team captain, who gives viewers an inside look at the strong team ethic and rare “do for each other” mentality that propelled them to victory that day and turned the team into a cultural touchstone. With unprecedented access, the film uses candid, behind-the-scenes footage shot by the players themselves during the tournament to present a unique portrait of the women who irrevocably changed the face of women’s athletics. Reuniting key players from the 1999 squad and talking with current U.S. players as well, the film examines how women’s soccer – and women’s sports as a whole – has changed since that epic day at the Rose Bowl.
Attendees of the D23 Expo 2013 can catch an exclusive screening of this film featuring a Q&A with the director Erin Leyden and the producer Julie Foudy. The screening/Q&A will take place at The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Stage 28 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30 pm PT.

Five collectible trophies—specially designed for the À La Mode Costume Contest—will be awarded to the most magical costumes in the following categories: Original Design (or inspired by…), Re-creation, Craftsmanship, Young Fan, and Best in Show.
