runDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend Review and Podcast

Our bags were packed, running costumes prepared and the Skywalking Through Neverland team flew to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida for the runDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend!

Living in Los Angeles, my husband, Richard, and I are Disneyland Annual Passholders and avid Disney fans.  I’ve also been a runner since 2010. My first ever Half Marathon was the Inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon in 2012 at Disneyland.  What an amazing experience!  Having since run all three Tinkerbell Half Marathons, it was time to set my sights on a bigger goal: Disney’s Coast To Coast Medal.

Which brings me to our Princess Half Marathon trip to Walt Disney World in 2014.  This trip happily coincided with some fun changes to the runDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend: the Coast To Coast Medal turned into a special PINK edition for completing the women-centric runDisney races!  This was also the first year of the Inaugural Enchanted 10k as well as the Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge.  The Glass Slipper Challenge is when you run the Enchanted 10k on Saturday, then get up again on Sunday and run the Half Marathon.  The hardest part about THAT was getting up at 2:30 AM 2 mornings in a row… still on a 3-hour time difference.  However, the prospect of adding four medals to my collection for running two races kept me energized.

Enchanted 10k Skywalking Team

Skywalking Through Neverland Team

Saturday morning, 4:30 AM, our Skywalking Through Neverland team was ready to fly in the Enchanted 10K.  The Team consisted of my husband, Richard, as a Skywalking Peter Pan.  I was Tinker Bell, My mom was Queen Clarion from the Tinkerbell movies, my dad was Captain Hook and my friend Monique Harr, and runner of all previous Half Marathons with me, was Rosetta from the Tinkerbell movies.  Here are a few more pictures from the event.  You may notice our “Skywalking Through Neverland” shirts – more on that a bit later…

Richard almost didn’t make it:

Running Through Epcot

We took it easy and mostly walked the 10k, then spent the rest of the day at Epcot.

Then the day of the long-awaited Princess Half Marathon arrived.  I decided to do Running Rapunzel, while my friend Monique was (and always is) the Evil Queen.

Me as Running Rapunzel, and Monique Harr as the Evil Queen

Monique and I were the only ones in our party crazy enough to do both events.  Once again, we woke up at 2:30 AM and made our way to the Epcot parking lot.  From there, it was a 30 minute walk (yes, you read that right) a 30 MINUTE WALK to our starting corrals.  As we trudged along with the rest of our costumed runners at 4:00 AM, one girl sighed and said, “this should count as part of our 13.1 miles!”

Princess Half Marathon Start Corral

This is what 20,000 runners at 5:00 AM looks like

5:30 AM: The gun went off for Corral A!  Fireworks and music commenced.

5:50 AM: The gun went off for ME, in Corral E!  The most enchanting thing about running runDisney races are the character spots Disney provides, as well as actually getting to run through the Parks while the sun is coming up.  It’s amazing, exhilarating, tear-inducing.  There really aren’t enough adjectives to describe it.  Here are a few pictures to give a hint:

Me with FOUR Princes! Saw so many women pass up the HUGE line, only to run back and wait the 15 minutes for a picture

Despite the cost, the crowding and the many nay-sayers on the internet, there’s nothing like the feeling you get crossing that finish line, 13.1 miles and several hours after you’ve started.  Knowing the amount of effort you’ve put into training, planning, and persevering, I couldn’t help my eyes watering.

And then there’s the BLING!
