Disneyland Celebrates “it’s a small world” 50th Anniversary with Richard Sherman

It’s not every day that you get to participate in a giant, park-wide sing-along at Disneyland.  And it’s even more rare when you sing-along to “it’s a small world” with a true Disney Legend – Richard Sherman!!

But let’s start at the very beginning, shall we? A very good place to start!

April 10, 2014 marked the 50th Anniversary of “it’s a small world” ride.  The Walt Disney company has been promoting this event for the last month with a Global sing-along, special Park merchandise, and Disney Parks Blog posts on the history of the ride.  This all culminated on April 10th with a celebration in every Disney Park around the world. In keeping with the theme, “it’s a small world!”

While Disneyland Paris, Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland all had sing-alongs, our very own Disneyland got the best treat of all (in my biased opinion): Richard Sherman.

Just in case you were at Disneyland on April 10th and DIDN’T know about the 50th Anniversary…

The co-composer of “it’s a small world” and many other beloved Disney films and rides, hosted a Google Hangout at 1pm.  He played “Feed The Birds” on a piano right in front of the ride itself.  What an amazing treat!  And Mr. Sherman also answered several questions about how he and his late brother, Robert, composed songs for Walt Disney.  [Click here for our previous interview with the Disney Legend Richard Sherman.]

At 2:00 PM, the Disneyland Band marched out from behind “it’s a small world”, playing the iconic song, and Richard Sherman followed behind in one of the old-fashioned cars.  That is when the sing-along began!  Mr. Sherman had a microphone and he sang his way through Disneyland.  It was a small parade, but several of us made it much, much longer as we followed the Disney Legend up past the Matterhorn and down Main Street, singing “it’s a small world” all the way.  Magical!
