That’s pretty much how all the Cast Members sound like in LEGENDS OF FRONTIERLAND: GOLD RUSH at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. Every day from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Frontierland is recruiting whoever would like to play this role-playing game. You can go up to any location and join in the fun.

The Cast Members give you a name tag, a map and allow you to choose a name. They will then add a fun adjective: “One-Eyed Bill”, “JackRabbit Jesse”, “Silly Susie”. I was, of course, “JediTink”. I later learned that orange name tags are #MyFrontierland townspeople, while yellow name tags are #MyRainbowRidge folk. Here’s the full brochure you receive when you become a townsperson:

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Create Your Character: You can be whoever you want to be in the Wild West of Frontierland. You can be a peacekeeper, an outlaw, a miner…it’s all up to you! You will even be able to create a new name for your character. Whenever you enter Frontierland, that’s who you will be!

Earn “Bits”: “Bits” are the currency of the Western Territories. You can earn Bits by participating in tasks throughout the land and spend them on land purchases, to get information and for other worthy causes.

Legends Of Frontierland Trading Post

Earning bits seems to be the purpose of the game. You can earn bits for drawing signs, delivering Telegrams, catching outlaws and playing cards. I’m sure there’s more ways yet to be discovered. If you get ahold of a piece of gold, that’s worth 50 bits! Eventually, once you have enough bits, you can buy Land.

Choose a Side: Rumors of gold have led to a struggle for land. Which side will you take…joining the peaceful Frontierland citizens or the opportunistic Rainbow Ridge townsfolk?

I also discovered that you can change sides when I visited “The Hideout.” This is where the Rainbow Ridge folk were recruiting, and I promptly flew over to the Dark Side.

When I visited, there were far more Frontierland townsfolk, and Rainbow Ridge was trying to recruit more people. The bandits had a couple of us draw a sign to aid in recruitment. What do you think?

Learn the Lay of the Land: There are new Frontierland locations in play now with “Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush!” and each serves a unique purpose in the story.

* Trading Post – This is the meeting place and first stop for new Frontierland citizens. This is also where citizens can keep up with the latest Frontierland news and swap plans for fending off those Rainbow Ridge ruffians.
* Hideout – Like the Trading Post, the Hideout is the first stop and central meeting place for citizens of Rainbow Ridge.
* Telegraph Station – The information hub of Frontierland, this is the place to send and receive important messages.
* Sheriff’s Office and Jail – This is where outlaws are brought to justice and where lawmakers work to keep the peace.
* Talent Agency – Based in the Golden Horseshoe, this is where new talent is discovered and showcased in Frontierland.
* Card Table – Also located in the Golden Horseshoe, this ongoing card game plays host to outlaws and heroes alike. Be careful what you say here! You never know who may be listening.

True to RPG-style games, the Telegraph Station will print out Telegraphs with names of Park Guests playing the game at that moment in time. I had to deliver a Telegram to “Rootin’ Tootin’ Rachel”.

At the Sheriff’s Office and Jail, they had you creating Wanted Posters by drawing the Wanted Person, and then someone else would have to arrest that person and bring them back to jail. All to earn bits. But before they could be thrown in jail, there was a “High Noon” style shoot-out using “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Whoever lost the shoot-out got thrown in jail for 2 minutes.

The Talent Agency wasn’t open for recruits when I visited, otherwise you’d bet that’s where I would have been! I wonder if they will have people eventually sing with Miss Lilly to earn Bits.

To gather Bits faster, you can form Posses with other people. However, earning Bits requires lots of time. I was there an hour and a half and probably could have been entertained for another hour and a half. Over that time I earned 13 Bits. Here’s where LEGENDS OF FRONTIERLAND is interesting – they encourage you to come back over a period of days or weeks, as the story will be ongoing. In that way, this game is very much like a Role-Playing RPG Game for Annual Passholders. Because it’s really only APs that will be back each week to continue the story. You can also follow along in the story with the Disney Parks Blog.

I think LEGENDS OF FRONTIERLAND is a great addition to Disneyland, especially since I liked playing SORCERERS OF THE MAGIC KINGDOM and AGENT P’S WORLD SHOWCASE ADVENTURE at Walt Disney World when I visited. LEGENDS OF FRONTIERLAND is a bit different, because it’s all localized in one place; and the entertainment level of the game is based on how entertaining the Cast Members themselves, and you as a player in the game can make it. Some guests even came ready with cowboy hats, bandanas and boots!

So grab yer hat, rustle up some grub and water (you’ll be runnin’ around in the hot sun) and bring yer best accent to Disneyland’s LEGENDS OF FRONTIERLAND before it’s too late!
