In September 2008, the Comedy Warehouse closed with much of the Downtown Disney District’s Pleasure Island (soon to be Disney Springs). It was an improvisational comedy club where locals and tourists could visit frequently because each show was totally new and fresh. The cast routinely took audience members suggestions to craft a unique show time after time. It was so popular that Disney now brings it back – sort of – around this time of year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. From December 20th until January 4th you can enjoy showings of the Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special in the old American Idol theatre. The show runs multiple times each day so be sure to get a times schedule. Each performance lasts about 20-25 minutes and it’s not uncommon to see fans exiting one showing and getting right back in line for the next. Due to the nature of improvisation, one show can just be good while the following performance is side-splittingly funny. Continue for VIDEO highlights of this year’s Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special.
The cast I saw and filmed this past weekend was all made up of original Comedy Warehouse cast members that I remember from my youth. I was worried that the intimacy of the small stage venues might be lost in the absolutely huge American Idol Theatre. While I never sat more than 5 rows away, I’m happy to report it is just as hilarious as ever. And if Disney is paying attention, they filled the seats time after time showing there is a serious desire for this type of entertainment.
Long Live The Comedy Warehouse! Even if it’s only until January 4th, we can dream of a day where it might become a permanent part of the Walt Disney World Resort once again. Until then, I’ll take the Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special.
