The All-New WORLD OF COLOR: CELEBRATE! Debuts at Disney California Adventure for Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary

The Disneyland Resort kicks off their 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration this week, and the first new show to premiere is World of Color: Celebrate! at Disney California Adventure.  “Celebrate!” is completely new from start-to-finish with Neil Patrick Harris hosting.  The show celebrates “the wonderful world of Walt Disney” with a large focus on Mickey Mouse, animation, and Disneyland.  It’s quite spectacular with jaw-dropping water, fire, lighting, and projection effects, however, there may be a hiccup or two – more on that later.  Continue reading for more first impressions of World of Color: Celebrate! from myself and Adventures by Daddy contributor, Sarah Woloski.

The show begins with Neil Patrick Harris taking a look back at the creation of Mickey Mouse where Walt reminds us, “that it was all started by a mouse.”  Here we see clips from some of Mickey’s finest moments, including Steamboat Willie, Plane Crazy, and Fantasia.  There’s also a new “Celebrate” song which is sung by our host, but I have to say this was one of the hiccups for me – it just didn’t pack much of a punch and wasn’t very memorable.  Nothing at all like the grandiose version of “Wonderful World of Color” from the previous show.

This transitions into feature animation beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  From there, we see an array of clips highlighting films from Walt Disney Animation and Pixar, inexplicably ending with the first (and only) full film sequence for which song? You probably guessed it – “Let it Go” from FROZEN.  This was met with mixed reviews from the crowd. There were probably just as many cheers as there were groans, but none of that mattered to the little girl standing next to me singing along to every word.  Which I’m sure is why the song was wedged into the show.  That said, a brilliant brand new effect was introduced to the audience during this performance that caught just about everyone by surprise (for the good!).

The focus then shifts to Disneyland, showcasing a few individual attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s a small world, Haunted Mansion, and Star Tours, to name a few.  Sarah and I both agree, this section feels a lot like the “Remember… Dreams Come True” fireworks spectacular from Disneyland’s 50th anniversary and was a big highlight of the show.

After Star Tours, the show takes a brief detour into Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was a little out of left field given that it was the only live-action film featured (and it was in the middle of a theme park segment), but it was welcomed with huge applause from the crowd and definitely ramped up the excitement.  Regarding the segment, avid Star Wars fan Sarah Woloski said,

My favorite part had to be when the Star Tours ride segued into actual footage from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS teaser trailers. Including Rey on her speeder, BB-8, and a certain legendary Star Wars couple: Han Solo and Chewbacca. “Chewie, we’re home!”

Moving back to Disneyland park, a new “Forever Young” song plays while clips of vintage and current attractions flash on the water screens.  It’s a great trip down memory lane, and it all leads us back to Walt once again, the man who never gave up on his dreams and created a legacy.

This is where the show comes to an end and it goes out with a bang.  Using every effect to it’s fullest, lights, lasers, fire, you name it – they pull out all the stops!

Overall, I really enjoyed World of Color: Celebrate!  I appreciated the focus on Walt Disney in recognition of the 60th anniversary, and the show has never looked better.  The enhanced effects are a beautiful addition and really add to the whole experience. The only real downer for me was that the music was pretty lackluster, but maybe it’ll grow on me over time.  Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing the show again in the near future.  How about you?  Are you planning a visit to the Disneyland Resort for the 60th celebration?

Three new shows were introduced for Disneyland’s 60th anniversary, so be sure to check out my review of Paint The Night Parade, and Disneyland Forever.
