Head outside, enjoy the crisp fall air, and take in the fall colors of the changing leaves. With so many states proclaiming to have the best fall foliage, it shouldn’t be hard to find a prime “leaf-peeping” spot close to home. My home state of New York even offers a weekly Fall Color Report every Wednesday afternoon. Our friends at Family Travel Forum have compiled all the Leaf-Peeper Hotlines so you can call ahead and get the up to date color report.
It’s harvest time, and the farm fields are packed with apples and pumpkins. The ears of corn may be picked, but the stalks are carved into clever designs – like my neighbor at Stokoe Farms’ corn maze outlining Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan in a remarkable display of hometown pride. You can find cider mills that press apples into liquid goodness, or pumpkin patches filled with orange orbs awaiting transformation into Jack-O-Lanterns. Hay rides, ziplines, animals and more make a visit to the farm an activity full of family fun.
As father to a high school senior, our family is deeply immersed in visiting colleges this year, and fall’s the perfect time to take a campus tour. There’s football in the air, or any number of other fall sports such as soccer, field hockey, or tennis. Or just take a stroll through the lovely landscaped campuses – you never know what you may find, like this life-size statue of Jumbo at Tufts University.
Those are just a few ideas for how your family could get outside and enjoy the outdoors this fall. What are some of your family’s favorite activities for the month?
