A Die-Hard Star Wars Fan Reviews Disney Infinity 3.0

Disney Infinity 3.0 adds Star Wars!!

I couldn’t be more thrilled. I jumped on the Disney Infinity bandwagon when 2.0 came out introducing Marvel characters. The temptation to play as Thor wielding my hammer was too intense to resist.

Slowly I learned the game (which is really 10 games in one), becoming more obsessed with each passing week. In May Disney Interactive announced that STAR WARS would be coming to Disney Infinity 3.0, and the gaming world went nuts.  Well it’s finally here! Of course I bought Disney Infinity 3.0 the first day it came out on August 30 and have been playing it ever since.

OVERVIEW OF DISNEY INFINITY

If you’re new to the Disney Infinity universe, let me briefly explain the core game mechanics: the game is roughly divided into two parts. The first part consists of play sets, with a more structured style of gameplay and a straightforward game narrative. The second part of the game is the Toy Box, where toy versions of your favorite characters interact and where you can create your own, incredibly dense levels using designs that you come up with. Like LEGO inside your gaming console. Now in order to play with a character, you set an actual game piece with the character’s figure on a special base included in the game. These figures alone are worth diving into the game. Amazing design, amazing sculpts, amazingly cute!

Disney Infinity 3.0 introduced new game mechanics which Toy Box artists can use to build their own toy boxes, and also introduced 3 Star Wars play sets, an INSIDE OUT play set and one Marvel play set. (Two of these play sets are not available to buy yet.)

Twilight Of The Republic Play Set Review

This is an all-new storyline set in Episodes I-III of the Star Wars Saga. Characters you can use in this play set include Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.

With the introduction of Jedi means you get to use lightsabers and the Force in your gameplay! I find that Disney Infinity really tries to differentiate between different characters, even with Force and Lightsaber skills. Ashoka Tano, for instance, has a lightsaber move called “Spinning Salvation” in which she attacks forward and spins her lightsabers at the same time. Once you learn the keypad progression, this move is addicting.

@heruniverse Ahsoka’s bada$$ “spinning salvation” lightsaber attack!! I love her!! #disneyinfinity

Obi-Wan Kenobi uses more defensive techniques. His Force power utilizes confusing his enemies to fight each other. The other characters have moves that compliment their characters as well.

As for the storyline of Twilight Of The Republic, it works well to facilitate different gameplay. In 2.0, the Avengers play set was bogged down by the same thing over and over again – endlessly fighting Frost Giants. In this 3.0 play set, you have tasks that range from collecting baby Banthas to shooting down ships in your starfighter to fighting Darth Maul. You also have four different planets to navigate: Geonosis, Tatooine, Naboo and Coruscant.

Overall I loved it! The play set is relatively short but it still took me two weeks to complete because I’m not the best player. And the replayability is fantastic. You collect Stars for each task, but some tasks you have to complete at a certain difficulty level or as a certain character to get those extra stars, so you end up having to go back and do the level with the right character.

Rise Of The Empire Play Set Review

I just acquired Rise Of The Empire this week, and am only a quarter of the way through. This play set follows the story of Han, Luke, Chewie and Leia during Episodes IV-VI, changing it up a bit to include all four characters at all points in the story line.

You get to fly the Millennium Falcon, a Skyhopper and an X-wing. You get to fly against the Death Star and do the Trench Run from A New Hope. There are four planets to visit here, as well: Tatooine, Death Star, Hoth and Endor. Many of the adventures are as diverse as the Twilight Of The Republic play set. However, on Tatooine you can’t fly the Falcon until you’ve acquired enough credits, and you acquire credits by doing various tasks in Mos Eisley. But some of the tasks require collecting even MORE credits, so it got a bit repetitive.

As with the previous Star Wars play sets, this one is extremely family friendly and can be done in 2-player co-op mode. So Leia can fight alongside Han or Chewie or Luke. I love that aspect. You can also set your difficulty level if you’re not that great of a player, or you want more of a challenge. I’m definitely having a blast playing in the Star Wars universe.

Inside Out Play Set Review

The Inside Out Play Set is more of a platforming game. You are inside Riley (the 11-year-old girl’s head) and she’s just had a nightmare. Different levels in Riley’s head are alternately 3D worlds and more 2D worlds like you see in Super Mario Bro’s. The Inside Out characters are adorable.

Each level requires some problem-solving skills, like jumping on things, backtracking to go forward and bouncing on clouds. I found after about 5 levels my head hurt because I was thinking so much! But it’s super-fun and colorful and perfect for little kids and helping their brains grow. I can see many little girls loving this playset because it’s so colorful, pretty and adorable. I mean, there are rainbow bridges! The Inside Out characters each have a different ability that can help you in each level.

  •  Anger walks on lava
  • Joy can glide for awhile
  • Fear runs fast
  • Disgust can hop the highest on clouds
  • Sadness floats on clouds without them disappearing

If you bought Disney Infinity 3.0 just for the Star Wars play sets, I urge you to pick this one up as well. It is so different from anything else Disney Infinity has put out so far.

Star Wars Additions

Here’s a list of some of the awesome STAR WARS additions to Disney Infinity 3.0.

  • So not only do you get these playsets, but as you play you unlock pieces to use in your own Toy Box, such as an Ewok Village, Hera and The Ghost, Death Star building sets…
  • Star Wars is totally integrated into the Toy Box Hub, which is where you learn the game! As you learn to ride vehicles, you drive a land speeder, X-wing, Taun-Taun and pod-racer. In fact, the whole “driving” section of the hub is Tatooine-based.
  • In PS4 and XBoxOne, you get an Ewok village in your Toy Box Hub!
  • New Star Wars Creative-Toys include a Holocron which can only be activated by Force users. So put this in your Toy Box if you want to create alternate paths or secret missions for Jedi or Sith. Also a Droid Spawner – Set this down in your toy box and set it to spawn droids that you can escort, or they escort you. As you play through the Star Wars playsets, you’ll unlock more and different droids.
  • Space combat and vehicles
    • Fly the X-wing
    • Do podracing
    • There’s a chase sequence in Coruscant
  • I love the Star Wars music that they have playing with the Star Wars playsets.

Overall I absolutely can’t complain. I’m not a huge gamer, which means I’m very picky about which games I actually buy. Because Disney Infinity is so diverse and the figures are so cute, I will be picking up every play set and most of the figures for the foreseeable future. It’s the game that keeps on expanding every time you buy a new figure! Do yourself a favor and pick it up, you won’t be disappointed.
