Universal Studios Hollywood Holidays Brings Grinchmas Fun for the Entire Family

It’s that time of year again at Universal Studios Hollywood – Grinchmas! We were excited to check it out since we had never been to Universal Studios Holidays.

The park gets all spruced up, and we had a lot of fun walking around the park checking out all of the decorations.

The Universal Plaza transforms into Grinchmas, where The Grinch and residents of Whoville celebrate the holidays together. Located at the heart of the park, the centerpiece is the towering, twisting, Grinchmas tree standing at over 60 feet.

The area is very immersive and you feel like you have been transported into Whoville. And no visit to Whoville would be complete without the mean green one himself, The Grinch! Although he has been quite nice since his heart grew three sizes! We even took our picture with Max the dog while visiting Grinchmas.

The performers walking around are charming and very engaging. At one point a Whoville resident thrilled my children by sitting down on the ground beside my children and chatted for a bit before the stage show started. They loved it!

In front of the Grinchmas Tree we were entertained by Martha May and the Who-Dolls as well as the Wholiday Singers, Whoville’s resident Boy-Band singing holiday classics and modern pop songs.

Once the sun went down we watched the Grinchmas Tree lighting ceremony. This is something not to be missed. This presentation repeats every half hour, so you will have plenty of opportunities to catch it.

In addition to the stage shows, there are several activities we participated in including, tree trimming, cookie decorating, and Story Time with Cindy-Lou. Another neat little thing is a visit to the Who-ville Post Office. They have the “Grow Your Heart 3 Sizes” campaign. You can share your good deeds on a postcard and mail them over to The Grinch. In return Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. and Random House Children’s Books, will pay it forward by donating a book to a child in need through First Book on behalf of the sender.

If you need more of that loveable Grinch, Grinchmas is also a part of the Studio Tour. On the tour you can visit part of the actual movie set from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch and the citizens of Whoville have a song and dance number for you. This is in addition with all of the other features of the tour including, Jaws, Earthquake, King Kong 3D, and the all new Fast and Furious – Supercharged!

The Christmas magic has spread all throughout the top lot of Universal Studios. Movie magic realism has been used to transform the rooftops with snow so real looking you swear a snow storm just passed through.

But the Christmas fun doesn’t end there.

Universal CityWalk is also alive with holiday fun. Take a picture in front of a 40-foot christmas tree with 200,000 LED icicles! You can visit with Santa Claus and take advantage of other photo opportunities in addition to free concert performances throughout the month of December. During our visit, Chabad of the Valley had its popular annual Chanukah@Citywalk event.

Popular Jewish singers Eli Marcus, Edon, and Gad Elbaz performed and they drew massive crowds. By the time we got to the CityWalk “5 Towers” plaza area, the concert was in full swing and we were unable to see Santa. The Christmas tree was not lit either, but it may have had something to do with the Chanukah event. There will be plenty of time for us to return and see since the Christmas festivities go on through January 1, 2016.

We REALLY enjoyed our time at Universal. Grinchmas is whimsical and wonderful and a delight for all ages. We particularly enjoyed seeing the Grinchmas Tree. It’s really unique and absolutely stunning at night.

Speaking of absolutely stunning… Let me address the Hippogriff in the room. Hogwarts! I’ve seen plenty of pictures on online, but none of them do it justice. Seeing Hogwarts in person put a tear in this theme park geek’s eye. It is absolutely breathtaking and it is nothing like I imagined. It’s better! And we now have a date – April 7, 2016. There is still a lot of construction going on in and around the park as they prepare for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and I can’t wait to see it all in completion.

Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood runs weekends on December 5-6 and 12-13, then continues daily from December 18, 2015 through January 3, 2016.

Admission to Universal CityWalk is always free.
