Disney Infinity THE FORCE AWAKENS Playset - Faster and More Intense!

Disney Infinity THE FORCE AWAKENS playset takes you on a ride through the movie itself. If you haven’t seen STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I would recommend waiting to play the set until you’ve seen the #1 film in America.  We previously told you about the Star Wars additions to Disney Infinity 3.0, now let’s take a detailed look at the Disney Infinity THE FORCE AWAKENS playset.

Overview

The playset comes packaged with Rey and Finn (both of whom don’t have last names at this point) as well as a clear playset piece containing a First Order Stormtrooper helmet.  Add on figures are Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren, along with The Force Awakens power disc pack which comes with 4 discs: Resistance Tactical Strike, Poe’s Resistance Jacket, Finn’s Stormtrooper Gear and the Quadjumper.

The playset takes you through 3 planets, Jakku, Takodana, and Starkiller Base. You see old friends and meet new ones as you search for the missing hero.

Initial thoughts

You arrive on Jakku and immediately have to do tasks that require you to “salvage” pieces scattered on the planet.  After gathering enough salvage, you can fix things that allow you to climb or access areas, buy various items and complete tasks.  I like the fact that it uses Rey’s profession to further along the story.  In fact, it feels wrong to use any character but Rey here.  As with all Disney Infinity games, the object is to complete tasks with as many stars as possible as you work your way through the playset.  If you’re wondering whether or not you get to fly the Millenium Falcon, the answer is YES!  Quite quickly too!  Soar through the starship graveyard on Jakku just like Rey and Finn do in the movie.  Then blast your way into space in Poe’s X-Wing, taking down Star Destroyers.

The mix of tasks works really well for this playset.  There’s plenty of fighting, gathering, collecting and flying to be had throughout.  My one negative is the playset isn’t long enough!  I played through in 3 nights, whereas the other Star Wars playsets took me at least 2 weeks and I still haven’t beaten the final Battle Of Endor in the Rise Aganst The Empire Playset. It’s hard!!

Character Play

Quite simply, Rey is awesome.  She spins her staff around much like Ahsoka Tano has her spinny lightsaber moves.  When leveled up, Rey is very powerful and agile, and she’s my favorite of this particular playset.  Now, here’s where I’m hoping Rey gets an upgrade or another character sculpt eventually: she doesn’t have the Force or a lightsaber.  I can’t WAIT until this happens!  Kylo Ren is the only character who has the Force, which is useful on Takodana.  He can access areas the others can’t.

Kylo is not quite as powerful as Darth Vader, but he has the special ability of freezing and stunning enemies.  Once done, he can do with them what he likes.  Both Poe and Finn carry blasters, and they have an unusual ability I haven’t seen before in other characters: Boost Of Confidence - defeating an enemy while shooting in Aim Mode will fill his Special Move Meter.  This becomes especially handy during some of the tasks in space.  At first I didn’t see the purpose of unlocking this ability but it has certainly become very useful.

Overall Thoughts

There are only 3 planets in THE FORCE AWAKENS Playset, and I wish there was one more.  It would give the set just enough length.  Or even just the ability to go inside Maz Kanata’s palace and explore.  From Jakku you fly to Takudana and do many lake tasks as well as land tasks, then off you go to Starkiller Base.  We’re missing a stop at the Resistance Base.  That being said, this playset definitely has more gameplay in space than any other Star Wars set.  I got quite good at maneuvering the Falcon and shooting down TIE Fighters with ease, even at Hard difficulty.

The final battle and boss is, of course, Kylo Ren.  But you have to face him and defeat him 3 times!!  It nearly wiped out my entire Star Wars squadron of characters!  However, you can only defeat him by throwing power cells at him, so your characters’ special moves and abilities really don’t matter.  This is sad, because I really like putting Ahsoka in there as my finisher, with her spin spinning away with lightsabers.

Overall, I would definitely regret not getting this playset.  Once again, the Disney Infinity character sculpts are amazing.  The fact that the actual actors in the film reprise their roles for these characters really helps in storytelling.  It’s a great companion to the movie, and Rey alone is worth the price.

And if you haven’t heard it yet, here are my thoughts on this Disney Infinity playset in audio form, on Episode 106 of Skywalkng Through Neverland:
