Hard to believe that SHREK is 15 years old, same age as our youngest daughter Evie. She’s never known a world without the giant green ogre; so we celebrated the SHREK 15 milestone with a movie night. Oh yeah, we got Shreked, and had a swamp party with not 1, not 2, not 3, but all 4 SHREK movies to watch in a Swamp-A-Thon. But would our teenage daughters be “too cool” to join in? Shrek’s been something of a fixture around our house. Last year, Maggie (18 years old) performed in the high school production of “Shrek: The Musical,” and it’s not unusual to hear Evie say, “Get Shreked” when someone trips, stumbles, or bumps into something. Therefore we were excited when Fox Home Entertainment Insiders sent us a box of Shrek Swag, “Shwag???” for the occasion (shown above).
We started off our Shrek 15 Fest making some “Gingy” friends to snack on during the Swamp-A-Thon. Evie and I worked together in the kitchen while she streamed the 10 hour version of Smash Mouth All Star. Ummmm, yeah… nothing beats 10 hours of They Don’t Stop Coming… must be a teen thing.
As we settled in to watch the first movie, a funny thing happened, the girls joined in for the family movie night in a way that hasn’t happened for a long time. When SHREK started, Maggie and Evie both started singing along to Smash Mouth’s All Star, and we all had fun watching and laughing together. “I forgot how good this movie was,” Maggie said somewhere along the way. First SHREK down and only three more to go…
We took a break before starting up SHREK 2 to enjoy the a beautiful summer day with a little outdoor fun. I posted “Pin the Tail on Donkey” on our fence outside, and invited the girls to play. Of course Maggie didn’t want anything to do with it, but eventually joined in when she saw us being silly and laughing together. Maybe it didn’t hurt that I was willing to join in too.
After playing outside, we went back in and fired up SHREK 2 while dining on a swamp-tastic dessert of… well, dirt of course.
And after staying up late watching SHREK movies, what better way to wake up from a Swamp-A-Thon than with Donkey’s favorite food, of course – waffles.
We didn’t quite make it through all 4 SHREK movies, but that’s OK. We had a day full of family fun where we could relax, be silly, and laugh together. Thanks to Fox Home Entertainment and Fox Home Entertainment Insiders for all the SHREK 15 goodies. It was great to reconnect with the ogre, and the family.
