Embassy Suites Washington DC Georgetown Helps Families #FindYourParkDC

My wife and I LOVE our National Parks, and we’ve tried to instill that appreciation in our children.  Washington DC has over 150 major named historic parks, squares, circles and triangles and 80 historic structures. Therefore, when we dropped our daughter off for her first year of college at American University, we stayed at the Embassy Suites Washington DC Georgetown and took advantage of their #FindYourParkDC Package.

Embassy Suites Washington DC Georgetown is a mere 1.5 miles from the Lincoln Memorial and National Mall.  When we checked into the hotel, we received a Find Your Park tote bag filled with a house-made granola snack (that was absolutely delicious), 2 bottles of water, gardening gloves and Junior Ranger activity guide – everything we needed to explore the outdoors around our nation’s capital.

Location and Lobby

In addition to being close to the National Mall, Embassy Suites Washington DC Georgetown is only half a mile from the Dupont Circle Metro Stop making it incredible easy to get to wherever you need to go in the city. Of course our primary goal for this trip was making sure our daughter settled into her dorm at American University, and the Embassy Suites Washington DC Georgetown was a perfect location for us – just 3 miles from campus.

The hotel lobby was elegantly appointed with comfortable sitting and conversation areas, workspaces with plenty of outlets, conference and meeting rooms.  It was certainly family-friendly with many families milling around the lobby as well as a large-group of school children in town to tour the sites.

Keep in mind that (like most city hotels, especially those in DC) parking is not included in your room rate.  Parking is shared with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel a block away and costs $34/night.

Accommodations

Of course the Embassy Suites brand is known for their two-room suites, and it’s one of the reasons we think the hotel is perfect for family travel.  Their two-room suites allow parents and kids to each have their own separate spaces.  The bedroom (pictured below) had two plush, comfortable queen-sized beds, a 37-inch flat screen HD television, MP3 player clock radio, and plenty of storage space in the dresser and closet.  Mom and I shared one bed, our 18 year old daughter took the other (before we dropped her off at American University… sniff, sniff), and our 15 year old used the pull-out couch in the living room.

The bathroom was plenty large enough for the family, and featured Giovanni bath products.

In the living room there was a queen-sized sleeper sofa that my daughter said was very comfortable, “it didn’t even feel like a couch.”  There was a very cushy armchair – I need to find where Embassy Suites gets their furniture because it would fit right in with our house.  There was also a 42-inch flat screen HD television set up next to a desk and workspace.

Separating the living room from the bedroom was a kitchenette area with wet bar, Keurig coffee maker, mini-fridge, and microwave.

We loved our oversized suite, and there was plenty of room for the entire family. We settled in for a comfortable final family “pizza night” dinner watching the end of the summer Olympics from Rio.

Restaurants and Dining

All Embassy Suites hotels have the complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast.  We fueled up with a large, protein-filled breakfast of omelets and pastries before heading off for the big college move-in.

Of course the other Embassy Suites differentiator is their complimentary evening reception with free drinks and light snacks.  We weren’t able to take advantage of the reception this time, as American University kept us occupied until the evening with move-in activities.  However, the hotel had a wonderful recently remodeled space for their daily gathering.

Finally, there was a new restaurant in the testing/tasting phase during our visit; keep an eye out for Trattoria Nicola’s to open in the near future.

Pool and Amenities

The Embassy Suites Washington DC Georgetown was in the process of an extensive rennovation, and had completed the lobby, breakfast area, and two-room suites.  The pool and exercise facilities were closed during our visit as part of the remodel.  The hotel was offering guests a pass to use a neighboring facility, but our family was getting plenty of exercise during college move-in so we didn’t take them up on the offer.  If an onsite pool is important for your family’s stay, make sure you check with the hotel to see if it will be open during your visit.
