I remember seeing the original GHOSTBUSTERS the summer of ’84 in the theater with my good friends. We were still in high school, and thought Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson were hysterical in the sci-fi comedy as the GHOSTBUSTERS team. Fast-forward 30+ years, and I was excited to share the new GHOSTBUSTERS team of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones and #BooItForward with my own family.
I was surprised when I arrived home from work to a fun package from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. They have partnered with Walmart to create this GHOSTBUSTERS themed #BooItForward kit with a GHOSTBUSTERS Blu-ray and treats all in a fun Jack-O-Lantern bucket.
If you’re not family with the “Booing your Neighbor” tradition, it’s been around for a few years, and is growing in popularity as a fun, safe, family-oriented activity. You might also hear it as “Ghosting” or “Boo-gramming.” Last year around this time our doorbell rang, but when we went to the door there was nothing more than a bag of goodies and a note. We’d been “Boo-ed,” and we had 48 hours to “Boo” our neighbor and keep it going throughout the neighborhood.
This past weekend we had a pizza-movie night to watch the newest version of GHOSTBUSTERS led by the female comedy team of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Again, the GHOSTBUSTERS were called to save Manhattan from another invasion of spirits, spooks and slime that engulfs the city along with some not-so-subtle cameos by the original GHOSTBUSTERS members. The souped-up special-effects in Paul Feig’s remake made for some spectacularly fiendish looking ghouls. While Kate McKinnon’s over-the-top, loose cannon portrayal of crazed scientist Holtzmann stole the show.
GHOSTBUSTERS was a great choice for our Halloween-themed family movie night, and we certainly enjoyed the weekend escape. Oh, and don’t think we forgot about “Boo-ing It Forward.” We made sure to re-stock the Jack-O-Lantern, complete with the movie surprise, tip-toe over to our neighbor’s, strategically place it on the front stoop, ring the doorbell, and… run! I wish I could have seen their faces when they “Answered the Call” to the doorbell. Hopefully, their family enjoyed the GHOSTBUSTERS #BooItForward surprise as much as we did.
