Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Holiday in the Park 2016 is now open for the season. And this year, Santa delivered several new offerings in addition to the charming holiday decor from years before. One of the things that is new this year is in the “Screampunk” District. And it’s called… wait for it… “Gleampunk” District! Cheesy name aside, what they have done to the area is really neat. Lots of great lighting throughout the area, some projection mapping on the side of the Gearworks Theatre, and really cool looking steampunk characters.

Speaking of the Gearworks Theatre, they have added a new holiday show. Kwerkmas – a fun show with great acrobatics, dancers, a magician, and trampoline jumpers. We were disappointed that this year’s Halloween Fright Fest didn’t have a version of this show. So it was a nice surprise that they included for the holidays because it is very good.

But the big attraction this year for Holiday in the Park is the addition of a new VR experience for the New Revolution. Six Flags partnered with the Hallmark Channel to create “Santa’s Wild Sleigh Ride”. This is a new VR movie specifically for Holiday in the Park. Sadly I didn’t not get to view it due to riding in the front seat with my daughter (who was not allowed to wear them due to age requirements). And they don’t allow guests to ride with helmets in the front row.

It’s strange to have a Santa / kids theme ride, and kids under 13 are not allowed to wear the VR helmet. A park employee told us that this is a rule Samsung enforces. But rules are rules, so I followed along. My wife did view it and enjoyed it very much. The VR piece has you riding in Santa’s sleigh right alongside the big man chasing a naughty little elf who is trying to foil Santa’s present delivery. As you fly through snowy town scenery chasing the elf you can throw snowballs at moving targets throughout the ride. And like any Hallmark Christmas movie, there is a happy ending.

Returning to the park this year is Holiday Square, DC’s Rockin’ Universe, Winter Wonderland, the band Snowy Nights, and freezing weather. Six Flags treated us with a little reception in the Katie’s Kettle area that is a part of Winter Wonderland. With the cold weather and the snow it really felt like you were IN a winter wonderland. Grab some hot chocolate, have a seat, listen to the Christmas music, and just enjoy the ambiance. My favorite area by far.

Holiday Square

They also bring out some great food for Holiday in the Park including the Holiday Dog (A Turkey dog with stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayo), Mac and Cheese Burger, and many sweet treats including peppermint candy apples, cranberry fudge, banana pudding, S’mores, and chocolate dipped pretzels with sea salt.
