FEATURE FILM

Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE tells the story of a man’s journey to discover himself when his life changes forever after a horrific car accident that renders his hands useless. When traditional medicine fails Dr. Stephen Strange, he travels to the remote Kamar-Taj in search of a cure, but instead discovers the mystical arts and becomes a powerful sorcerer battling dark forces bent on destroying our reality. In her spoiler-free review, Sarah Woloski called DOCTOR STRANGE your “least favorite ice cream.” It may not be your favorite, but it’s not bad either. It’s ice cream, for heaven’s sake!  Personally, I loved DOCTOR STRANGE, and appreciated the cerebral take on a Marvel super hero.

Doctor Strange Combo Pack

DOCTOR STRANGE Blu-ray Bonus features include:

Certainly one of the highlights of DOCTOR STRANGE was its visual effects.  While you lose a little of the “wow-factor” that the theatrical release contains on the big screen, you gain more details about “how they did that.”  The bonus features on the DOCTOR STRANGE share insight into how those visual effects came to life, and it is fascinating to watch how Director Scott Derrickson pushed the boundaries.  See for yourself in this clip below.

The filmmakers reveal details of the movie’s meticulously crafted costumes and sets, and how they faithfully recreated city streets in Hong Kong so much so extras were pointing out where they would have lived in particular buildings.

Other Featurettes Include

  • A Strange Transformation – Open your eye to a new dimension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and see how the filmmakers brought one of comic books’ greatest characters to life.
  • Strange Company – Find out what it’s like for the cast to work on a Marvel film, and how Director Scott Derrickson engineered one of the most ambitious, imaginative films ever.
  • Across Time and Space – Explore the countless hours of dance and fight choreography the actors endured in preparation for their physically demanding roles.
  • The Score-cerer Supreme – Join Composer Michael Giacchino and a full orchestra during live recording sessions, and experience the movie’s mind-bending music.

In addition to insight into the making of DOCTOR STRANGE, the bonus features included an overview of the Marvel Cinematic Universe including where the characters have come from in Phase 1 and 2, and where they are going in Phase 3 including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.  You’ll want to look very closely at the scenes from Thor: Ragnarok for a quick glimpse of Thor taking on a battle-armor clad Hulk in a Gladiator arena.

Speaking of Thor, we see more of what he was doing when the rest of the Avengers were fighting each other during Captain America: Civil War, and his relationship with his roommate Darryl.

Standard to most Blu-ray releases, we get a gag reel of flubs, bloopers, and outtakes that bring some humanity to Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.  Funny, Cumberbatch isn’t always the super-smart genius his characters portray, and he has some dance moves to boot.
