MARS – the ground-breaking National Geographic series that debuted November 2016 is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. MARS combines a scripted drama following an international crew of astronauts on the maiden voyage to the Red Planet with scientific documentary pieces about space flight. The drama had our family on the edge of our seat similar to 2015’s science fiction film The Martian starring Matt Damon, but we were equally (if not more) captivated by the documentary portions of the series explaining why it’s necessary for us to get there. Scientists and innovators such as Elon Musk, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Stephen Petranek explain what’s happening right now to make the trip a reality. The National Geographic sci-fi docudrama was produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard (co-founders of Imagine Entertainment and winners of the Best Picture Oscar for A Beautiful Mind), and contains two hours of extras, listed below. “This isn’t science fiction. It’s real science” Ron Howard.
Although, the recreated drama of the fictional story did not make the planet look like a relaxing vacation destination. It certainly depicted the demands of space flight, travel, and colonization in a real way, and the actors cinematography, and effects were of theatrical quality. I was particularly impressed with JiHAE playing the dual role of twins Joon and Hana Seung in the series.
However, the most interesting part for our family was the documentary segments from present day illuminating how science is currently working on preparing for a mission to the red planet. Did you know we had a “base” on the side of a mountain in Hawaii where astronauts are simulating the conditions and isolation of Mars? Or that colonization of Mars is not all that different from what researchers are already doing on the science base of Antarctica? We’re closer to that interplanetary mission than you think.
Most scientists believe humans will make their first trip to our planetary neighbor in the 2030’s – that’s only 15 years or so away. Want to know what you’ll need for the ultimate family travel adventure? Take a look below.
