Photo Tour of CHIHULY at the New York Botanical Garden Running Until October 29, 2017

Just east of Fordham University and north of the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden blossoms with glittering, glowing glassworks by the celebrated master of glass, Dale Chihuly. The CHIHULY at the New York Botanical Garden event runs now through October 29, 2017. As you enter from the Moshulu Gate and walk towards the park entrance, you’re greeted by Sapphire Star, a brilliant blue starburst near Wamsler Rock.

Farther along the path, Red Reeds on Logs reach for the sky, growing out of the Reflecting Pool.

There are chandeliers, baskets, sea shells, and more. New York Botanical Garden has created an interactive guide on their website, which shows you where to find the sculptures.

Adventures by Daddy was invited to a press preview of CHIHULY at the New York Botanical Garden. Britt Cornett, Head of Exhibitions at Chihuly Studio, and Karen Daubmann, Associate Vice President of Exhibitions and Public Engagement at NYBG, led the tour, explaining the various works of art and the careful curation of the plants that surround the glass sculptures. In order to complement the sculptures, plants were chosen for the texture and color of their foliage, with subtle flowers, to allow the sculptures to provide the color in the exhibit.

And if you think they’re beautiful in sunlight (and these pictures don’t do them justice), they’re even more beautiful by night! This is Neon 206 by day and by night. Make sure you come for New York Botanical Garden’s CHIHULY Nights Saturdays through June 24th and Thursdays in August, then both Thursdays and Saturdays in September and October.

For our Disney fans, who may have seen Chihuly’s chandeliers on the Disney cruise ships, this is Sol del Citron, located in front of the Haupt Conservatory. Do you see what I see in the close-up?

Throughout the summer there are special events connected to the exhibit. From the Summer Solstice Celebration on June 17 (Yoga on the Conservatory Lawn? Count me in!) to JAZZ & CHIHULY (three nights of jazz concerts – June 16, July 14, and August 18), there is something for everyone. You can even try your hand at drawing during the Plein-Air Invitational on June 11th. Check out the New York Botanical Garden website for more details and the full program of events.

During the press preview, I took a lot of photographs, including close-ups of details in the sculptures, which you can see in this gallery below, but there are more works at the exhibit.

You have until October 29th to get there, but you’ll want to go early and go often. We were also treated to a visit from Mr. Chihuly himself, standing in the Native Plants Garden in front of Koda Studies #1 and #2, as dapper and dramatic as the works of art he creates.
