San Diego Celebrates Mark Hamill and Names Street for Star Wars Actor

Sunday, July 30, 2017 was Mark Hamill day in the Clairemont community of San Diego, California as a street was named after the legendary Star Wars actor.  “I’m humbled and so touched by the kindness of the people from my old neighborhood in Clairemont who made it happen. I’ve always loved San Diego and lived some of the happiest years of my life there. To have their support means the world to me,” stated Mark Hamill.  Take a look at how San Diego’s NFL team leaving crossed paths with an actor from a galaxy far far away.

The January 12th announcement that the NFL’s San Diego Chargers were packing up and moving to Los Angeles set in motion the events that brought us to the naming of “Mark Hamill Drive.”

Located in Chris Cate’s 6th District is a street named Charger Blvd., a street many believed was named after the NFL team of the same name. As public outrage started to build and the process of “cleaning” San Diego of anything Charger related begun, residents of the Clairemont neighborhood came up with the idea of renaming Charger Blvd. to something for the Star Wars actor Mark Hamill who grew up in the same area. Mark Hamill lived on Castleton Drive in Clairemont in the ’60s and attended Hale Junior High and James Madison High.

With support from Councilman Chris Cate the idea took hold and formal plans developed to honor the actor.  On June 20th, the City Council voted to honor the actor as part of the city’s honorary street naming program and “Mark Hamill Drive” became official.

After the media Q & A, Mark took to the stage again for a few more pictures and he literally sat down to sign autographs for the fans that were on hand.
