The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! at Rochester Museum and Science Center

Science generates facts that require us to believe.  Ripley presents oddities and asks us to “believe it or not.”  Now the Rochester Museum and Science Center have combined the two to present The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not in a traveling exhibit on display in Rochester, New York until January 2, 2018.

The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not is a collection of items that you really do need to see to believe including: a calf with two faces, sculptures so small they fit in the eye of a needle, a crawl-through replica of the largest snake ever known, and a moving animatronic figure of the world’s tallest man.

In addition, there’s artwork made from pieces of candy or keyboard keys, there are optical illusions that fool the eye, and plenty of unique selfie opportunities throughout the exhibit.

Families can even find glimpses of Rochester’s eccentric past like Rattlesnake Pete clad in his snakeskin attire.

RMSC’s Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not promised to explain this unbelievable collection.  My daughter and I found the exhibit a little light on science but full of fun.  We did manage to gain a few nuggets along the way.  Did you know the prehistoric climate was so warm it allowed reptiles to grow much larger than today? Or that albino animals are more vulnerable to predators because they stick out?  Plus, once your family is drawn to the RMSC by the Ripley’s exhibit, kids are sure to be attracted to the museum’s other permanent scientific exhibits such as the Electricity Theater and Planetarium Star Shows.  So there’s plenty of learning to be had.

My teenage daughter and I had fun together at RMSC’s Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not.  We laughed, played, and learned a little too.  For those that do not live near or haven’t visited one of Ripley’s attractions in a few years, this is a great introduction to the type of family fun and interactive displays you can find.  For families who haven’t visited the Rochester Museum and Science Center for a while, this Ripley collection of oddities is definitely worth checking out.
