How long have you been anticipating AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR?? The Marvel film comes out April 27th and the Beverly Hills Press Conference on April 22nd featured an overwhelming 24, that’s twenty-four, celebrities!! Are you ready for this list?
To make sure everyone had a chance to talk, surprise moderator Jeff Goldblum (make that 25 celebrities!) spun the lottery ball box and pulled out various balls, each of which had a celebrity name or category. We were then able to ask questions based on the names. I was able to raise my hand for the third question, “Wears a Cape”, and talk with Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth! Check out the video below for Press Conference highlights. Scroll down to read about them instead.
Unfortunately, most of the cast and all of the press had not seen the film yet, so when it came to specific answers, they weren’t telling. We did, however, learn some fun facts about the filming process and characters. And that Robert Downey, Jr. IS Tony Stark.
Producer Kevin Feige confirmed that INFINITY WAR is heavily based and inspired by the original comics. When the story team is developing the movie, they rip out pages of the comics and hang them up around the story room for inspiration. Jim Starlin’s “Infinity Gauntlet” omnibus was of particular importance to this film – story lines and specific dialogue made its way from the page to screen.
The comics were not the only thing hung up around the story room. Co-director Anthony Russo mentioned that they hung up a picture of each character that’s ever appeared onscreen in a Marvel movie, and discussed how they could affect the story and other characters. With so many characters, they had so many ideas that 99% of them didn’t make it to film.
Speaking of affecting other characters, Thor spends some time with the Guardians of the Galaxy. When I asked Chris Hemsworth which scenes were difficult to film and why, he gave an interesting answer:
Chris Hemsworth: The first day was Thor meeting the Guardians and it felt like the first day at school for me, cause they all knew each other. I was the new kid. I had butterflies, but Chris Pratt gave me a big hug and the butterflies flew out of my ears.
Fresh off of BLACK PANTHER breaking all kinds of box office records to become the top-grossing Marvel film, Chadwick Boseman was asked if we should expect INFINITY WAR to be BLACK PANTHER 1.5.
Chadwick Boseman: Avengers Infinity War is not Black Panther 1.5. It was great to have some of these characters in Wakanda (I’m not saying which ones), but this movie is its own thing.
We can all anticipate some scenes in Wakanda! As the press conference wound down, Kevin Feige confirmed that it is the interpersonal relationships between characters that really take INFINITY WAR to the next level. This is what we should all look forward to the most, especially when it comes to Thanos and his daughters Gamora and Nebula.
Zoe Saldana: Besides these kinds of movies having action and entertainment, we wouldn’t be what we are in the MCU if it wasn’t for the emotional beats that all these relationships carry. Josh Brolin (Thanos), Karen Gillan (Nebula) and I had so much fun with the relationship that these daughters have with their father b/c they finally have the opportunity to address what it was like to have a dad that was so complicated.
What are you most looking forward to in INFINITY WAR? Is there a particular character that you love? Let us know in the comments. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR releases in the US on April 27th. See you in the theater!
