Walt Disney Imagineers revealed that Black Spire Outpost is the name of the village in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge the new theme park land opening at Disneyland Resort in California in summer 2019 and at Walt Disney World in late fall 2019. During a panel discussion at the special ticketed Star Wars: Galactic Nights event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a group of Imagineers including Scott Trowbridge, portfolio creative executive and studio leader at Walt Disney Imagineering, revealed the story and history of Black Spire Outpost as well as additional details about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. I had a front row seat for the discussion and recorded it all in the video below. Watch the video and continue reading for how you can adopt a Loth-cat as well as more details on the Star Destroyer battle attraction.
The name Black Spire Outpost comes from the geological formations that surround it – full of tall petrified trees. Margaret Kerrison, managing story editor for Walt Disney Imagineering revealed that as the largest settlement on the planet Batuu, Black Spire Outpost is an infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space.
During the discussion Eric Baker, creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, described his role gathering props and set pieces for the Black Spire Outpost. Baker also revealed a creature shop in Galaxy’s Edge that will contain all sorts of alien species like the adorable Loth-cats from the Star Wars Rebels animated series and said guests will have the ability to take these creatures home. A close eye could also see Porgs from Star Wars: The Last Jedi in the shop as well.
Jon Georges, executive producer Walt Disney Imagineering, shared additional details about the second major attraction (besides the Millennium Falcon) inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The Imagineers are hard at work building two life-size AT-ATs as part of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. The entrance to this battle attraction is a full-size Resistance troop transport ship (complete with cannons and battle damage) that guests will step into before setting off on the adventure.
In addition to the Inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge panel discussion, Galactic Nights included an interview with Joonas Suotamo, the actor who has taken over the role of Chewbacca from Peter Mayhew who portrayed the Wookie in the first Star Wars films. As the video shows, Chewbacca is in good hands with this tall, blue eyed, former gym teacher from Finland.
The Tower of Terror was also transformed into the planet Vandor from SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY along with Chewie and his Wookie roar in Disney’s latest projection mapping display.
And, of course, Stormtroopers were on the march led by Imperial Officers as well as Lord Vader.
