Hotel Review: Red Roof PLUS+ Ann Arbor North was Perfect for College Tour

Recently, Red Roof Inn hosted us at their Red Roof PLUS+ in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was the perfect place to stay for our last-minute getaway to check out the University of Michigan. Now that our daughter is a senior in high school, a lot of our family trips are college tours. Red Roof Inn worked perfectly for this trip as most of our time was focused on things other than the hotel. We just need a clean, comfortable, reasonably-priced place to sleep, and we found just that with Red Roof PLUS+.

We rolled into Ann Arbor late on a Saturday night after the 6.5+ hour drive from Rochester, NY. We were tired and exhausted thanks to a detour through some less than glamorous sections of Toledo, OH that left our daughter saying good-bye to her friends. “I’m going to die in Toledo,” she texted to them. It was as if Ohio was making it intentionally difficult for people to get to Michigan, strange. Upon arrival, the Red Roof PLUS+ front desk staff was friendly, welcoming, quickly checked us in and directed us to our room.

Entering our Red Roof PLUS+ room we were pleasantly surprised with the wood-laminate floors, flat-screen TV, and vessel sink in the wash area. However, the most-important thing were the two Serta Rest Suite double beds. Our 17-year old took one, and my wife and I snuggled together in the second. We normally sleep on a queen at home, and thought the double would be too small. However, we must have been comfortable since I slept later than I had in a long, long time.

Once I awoke on Sunday, I drove out to retrieve breakfast Fragels (a cinnamon sugar coated fried bagel Ann Arbor specialty) for the family, we showered and began exploring Ann Arbor.

I attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, and my wife worked her first post-graduate job at the University. So we were excited to show our daughter some of our old haunts around town. In the afternoon we headed to one of my favorite places in the area – Kensington Metropark.

We used to regularly visit Kensington Metropark when we lived in the area, and the path around Kent Lake was my favorite place to run. Evie and I took hike on the nature trail around Wildwing Lake where we saw plenty of herons, chickadees, and tufted titmice. After our outdoor excursion we stuffed ourselves on baked pasta and desserts at the Original Cottage Inn restaurant.

While I proposed taking Evie to one of my grad school procrastination joints, she was perfectly content hanging out with the family back in our Red Roof PLUS+ room. We tuned the flat-screen TV to college football while Evie took advantage of the multitude of outlets by the bed and free WiFi to stream her videos.

After another restful night, it was time for Evie’s official University of Michigan tour. She was ready and eager and our comfortable stay at Red Roof PLUS+ contributed to the success of our visit. The upscale economy stay at Red Roof PLUS+ was just the right level for this last-minute college tour getaway. We didn’t need a fancy resort with a lot of attractions we were not going to use – Red Roof PLUS+ had just what we needed at a value price. I can see why it’s a two time winner of USA Today’s 10Best Budget Hotel Brand poll.
