Walt Disney Studio’s Maleficent Starring Angelina Jolie Coming May 30, 2014

Walt Disney Studios announced the beginning of production for Maleficent coming to theaters March 14, 2014 July 2, 2014 May 30, 2014.  The film will star Academy Award®–winning actress Angelina Jolie in the title role as the classic Disney villain from “Sleeping Beauty.”  Disney also released this image of Jolie as Maleficent.  Continue reading for more details from Walt Disney Studios’ press release.

Walt Disney Home Entertainment announced Disney’s Maleficent arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Digital HD, Disney Movies Anywhere, DVD and On-Demand this November 4th.  This twist on Sleeping Beauty comes with spellbinding bonus features including: deleted scenes, “Building An Epic Battle,” the meticulous detail that went into creating Maleficent’s elaborate head wraps in “Classic Couture” and more.

Trailer released for Disney’s Maleficent during the Grammys featuring a haunting rendition of “Once Upon a Dream” by Lana Del Ray.  You can download Lana Del Rey’s “Once Upon a Dream” FREE for a limited time, on Google Play.  The song was made available as a free download today (Jan. 27) and will be available exclusively on Google Play through Monday, February 3rd; click here to download the song.

The first “teaser” trailer, images, and poster were released for Disney’s Maleficent giving us our first full look at Angelina Jolie in the title role, and she looks spectacular!  I’m looking forward to seeing this live-action twist on the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.  The release date for the film has shifted again to May 30, 2014.

Update January 15, 2013: The release date for Maleficent was shifted to July 2, 2014.  Rumor is the change was needed to open a spot for the release of Muppets Most Wanted produced by Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman and directed by James Bobin.  The screenplay for Muppets 2 is by Bobin and Nick Stoller, who will also serve as executive producer.  The cast includes Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell – and negotiations are underway with Tina Fey.

Burbank, CA – The Walt Disney Studios announced today that production began Wednesday, June 13th, on “Maleficent,” starring Academy Award®–winning actress Angelina Jolie.

Directed by two-time Oscar®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (“Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland”), in his directorial debut,and produced by Joe Roth, “Maleficent” is written by Linda Woolverton (“The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith and Palak Patel.

Co-starring in the film are Sharlto Copley (“District 9”), Elle Fanning (“Super 8”), Sam Riley (“On the Road”), Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Miranda Richardson (“The Hours”), Juno Temple (“Atonement”) and Lesley Manville (“Secrets & Lies”).

This is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.”  The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.

Behind-the-scenes talent includes Academy Award®–winning cinematographer Dean Semler (“Dances with Wolves,” “In the Land of Blood and Honey”), production designer Gary Freeman (“Saving Private Ryan,” “The Bourne Supremacy”), two-time Oscar® nominated costume designer Anna B. Sheppard (“Schindler’s List,” “The Pianist”) and seven-time Academy Award–winning makeup artist Rick Baker (“Planet of the Apes,” “Men in Black”).

“Maleficent” is scheduled for a March 14, 2014 release in 3D.
