Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 2 Coming July 3, 2013

Despicable Me was a surprise hit when released in 2010 with its “Superbad Superdad” Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) reformed by the love of three orphan girls.  The film was nominated for numerous awards, and spawned the Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem theme park attraction at Universal Orlando Resort.  Those breakout characters, the Minions, return July 3, 2013 for Despicable Me 2, and added to the voice cast is Academy Award winner Al Pacino playing… ??? (he’s rumored to play the villain.)  Update 5/6/13: Al Pacino has left Despicable Me 2 citing creative differences; he has been replaced by Benjamin Bratt.

This post will have all the official information from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s regarding the new film.  Continue reading for more images and trailers for Despicable Me 2, and for even more family movie news, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on twitter and “like” our facebook page too.

Despicable Me 2

From Universal Pictures’ Press Release

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s worldwide blockbuster Despicable Me entertained audiences around the globe in 2010, grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history.  In summer 2013, get ready for more Minion madness in Despicable Me 2.

Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy adventure featuring the return of (former?) super-villain Gru (Steve Carell), his adorable girls, the unpredictably hilarious Minions… and a host of new and outrageously funny characters.

Release date: July 3, 2013

Genre: 3D-CG comedy adventure

Cast: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Al Pacino, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher, Russell Brand, Ken Jeong, Steve Coogan, Nasim Pedrad, Moises Arias

Directed by: Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffin

Written by: Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio

Based on Characters Created by: Sergio Pablos, Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio

Produced by: Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy

While the “plot” in the first movie involved super-villain Gru attempting to steal the moon, it would appear something may be afoot from space once again.  The Minions are being kidnapped by someone (or something), and at least two of them are sucked into light emitting from the sky.

What do you think?  Were you a fan of Despicable Me?  Our family thought it was a cute and touching movie, and our youngest daughter loved the hi-jinks of the Minions.  This should be fun.
