The Dolphin Fountain – A Hidden Ice Cream Gem at Walt Disney World

Nothing says summer like a cold, rich and creamy, decadent scoop of ice cream (or two), and if you’re visiting Walt Disney World for your family summer vacation, let’s face it, the weather can be downright oppressive.  You need to look for ways to stay cool in the sweltering Florida heat.  Here’s a tip, avoid the lines and crowds at Disney’s Beach Club’s Beaches and Cream Soda Shop, and instead head over to the Dolphin Fountain for Walt Disney World’s hidden ice cream gem.  Keep reading for more details on what you can find at the Dolphin Fountain.

Tucked away at the bottom of the escalator of the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort is the counter service Dolphin Fountain.  It’s a great restaurant to go for lunch or a light dinner (I highly recommend the seared salmon salad), but it’s the ice cream that makes this place special.

In March, I was volunteering with 13 college students at Give Kids The World – where children with life-threatening illnesses stay when they have a wish to visit Walt Disney World (or Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, or anything related to Central Florida).  I wondered, where could I take this large group for dinner on a college student budget (and appetite)?  It hit me – the Dolphin Fountain.

The Fountain’s one of those undiscovered treasures at Walt Disney World.  Tourists wait for hours to get the Kitchen Sink sundae at Beaches and Cream, but you can walk right down the path to the nearby Dolphin Hotel and get an equally delicious “Fountain Funnel.”  No need to pay theme park admission to get a peanut butter and jelly shake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ 50’s Prime Time Cafe when you can get a scrumptious PB&J milkshake at the Dolphin Fountain.

If you don’t believe me, take the word of 13 ravenous college students.  They all loved the Dolphin Fountain, and thought their shakes, sundaes, and desserts were fantastic.  Trust me, I’ve never had to wait to get my fill.  Plus, since July was designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as National Ice Cream Month, and so many families are spending their summer vacations at Walt Disney World – it’s the perfect time to visit the Dolphin Fountain.  Tell them it was recommended by me (and my 13 college student volunteers).
