Like you may have, I had seen some photos and videos previously from the Universal Studios Florida theme park.  I kind of knew what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by more than a few things.

Springfield USA is built on a stretch of land to the right while facing The Simpsons Ride (previously Back to The Future).  This promenade always felt uninspired and lifeless to me until I made a left towards the ET Ride area.  But not anymore – cue, The Simpsons theme song…

The iconic Springfield USA complete with Duff Beer, serving 3 types of Duff made specifically for Universal Orlando by a local microbrewery and available nowhere else… along with many of the famous food eateries from the cartoon such as Krusty Burger, the Frying Dutchman, Luigi’s Pizza, Lard Lad Donuts, and Moe’s Tavern are all staged in detail.

Characters from The Simpsons are out and about including my favorite, Krusty the Clown, who is large and intimidating in a fun weird way.

The video below shares some of the highlights of our tour of Springfield USA.

Kang and Kodo’s Twirl ‘n’ Hurl is a new “Dumbo-type” spinner ride, but with a dark side.  The comments made by the Alien to riders as well as the pre boarding commentary are downright funny.  It’s a sinister ride where the Alien has plans to eat its human riders – but I didn’t tell you that.

There is also a light game element on this ride, where if you fly at a specific height, you can hit targets.  It was not entirely made clear before boarding, nor do I know the motivation – but it was fun watching the targets react fairly precisely.

Now, you may not think the food in Springfield is anything to write home about – but, like me, you would be wrong.  Prior to the tasting, I would not think a Krusty Burger or anything out of Moe’s Tavern would be anything other than cheap sub par food.  I guess it’s just because of the nature of the series and the lackluster names – I mean Lard Lad Donuts?

But Universal Orlando and its team really have made some great quality food and drinks for Springfield USA that I believe are worth a special trip.  Oh, and please try a Flaming Moe’s – you will see why in the video – so delicious – like an Orange Creamsicle.

About John Saccheri

John Saccheri has been rooted in the Disney culture from childhood. John only had the opportunity to visit Walt Disney World once, at the age of 5. After returning home, he never stopped talking about it, yearning to return. His parents were worried about this “obsession,” but John began working at the age of 12 with a focus on saving up for the next Disney trip. He was able to visit Disney World at least once a year from 14 years old onward. Today, a successful entrepreneur, John was able to move from his hometown of Long Island, New York, to Central Florida to be close to the Mouse. Going to the parks still seems like a fantasy to him!
