2015 Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival – Berries, Music, and Fun

Food, wine, beer and boysenberries! You really can’t go wrong. This spring, we attended KNOTT’S BERRY FARM specifically to try out their Boysenberry Festival in the theme park’s historic Ghost Town. The 16-day festival returned with an unforgettable lineup of exquisite Boysenberry Bites, live music & entertainment, gourmet food and the Wine and Craft Brew Tasting Garden.

Here’s a bit of history, if you’re fuzzy on where the Boysenberry came from. In the 1930s Walter Knott harvested the boysenberry, a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry, and named the new berry after its originator Rudolph Boysen.  Today, all boysenberries in the world can trace their roots back to KNOTT’S BERRY FARM.

The Park dolls itself up for spring and the festival, donning yellow and purple hues throughout. It’s very refreshing and pretty.

Overall, it’s a mini version of Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival. My husband and I especially enjoyed the wine and beer tasting. Upon first glance $19 seems a little steep for 5 tastings. Richard and I opted to split one tasting.

We were glad we did! Beyond the six tastings you actually get a healthy-sized cheese, fruit and cracker plate. We were also partaking in two Chicken and Sausage Boysenberry Sandwiches, so the amount of food was perfect for dinner.

And if you notice, the “tasting” of beer I was given was more like a 6 oz. drink! After splitting four of those, Richard and I couldn’t even finish and ended up giving our two remaining tastings to a happy group next to us.

While there were perhaps 25 different wines to choose from, there were only three beers. However, all were very good. I mean, you have to try Boysenberry Beer at the Boysenberry Festival, right? And they had an Espresso Beer – which was a dark beer mixed with actual espresso. I either like really light beers or dark, malty beers, so the Espresso Stout was a real treat.

The Wine and Craft Brew Garden was definitely the place to be, especially on a rainy evening in SoCal. It was cozy, drinks were flowing, and crowds were light.

After imbibing a bit, Richard and I made our way to the Birdcage Theatre, where we were treated to a fantastic performance of Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies and “their toe tappin’, knee-slappin’, gut-bustin’ country comedy show that will have audiences clamoring for more!” The Hillbillies are seasoned performers, having migrated over from Disneyland this past year, and it absolutely shows. Their show is polished, fun and completely entertaining. The rainy evening resulted in a less than packed house, yet the energy in the room was palpable.

We regrettable missed attending the Boysenberry Festival during the day, where it seems they have even more entertainment. There are daily contests like pie eating, a pie walk, Grandpa’s Boysenberry PJs Contest, and “vine”-dancing.

New for 2015, kids can join the classic Bear-y Tales characters in their very own pie making kitchen inside of Ghost Town’s Craft Barn. We saw the tale end of pie-making, and it looked VERY messy. Be prepared with wet wipes!

Overall we had a fun evening, but had we known about all the daytime events we would have made it to KNOTT’S earlier in the day. I recommend preparing for a full day, especially if you want to ride some awesome roller coasters, too.
