LEGOLAND New York Theme Park Opening North of New York City

Update October 25, 2017

It’s official! A LEGOLAND New York theme park is approved for Goshen, NY, approximately 65 miles north of New York City.  After more than one year of public meetings and hearings in addition to a thorough and transparent review process by officials, LEGOLAND New York has been granted conditional approval of its site plan by the Town of Goshen Planning Board, allowing it to officially move ahead with building the Park. LEGOLAND New York is scheduled to open in 2020.

Original post from June 2016 follows below

Merlin Entertainments announced plans to develop LEGOLAND New York – a $500 million dollar, 153 acre theme park resort – in Goshen, NY less than 90 minutes north of New York City.  The LEGOLAND New York plan was presented to the Town of Goshen planning board meeting on June 16, 2016, and included application for a resort, hotel, and theme park complex on 523 +/- acres.  LEGOLAND New York would be the third such theme park in the United States after LEGOLAND California and Florida and the seventh LEGOLAND park worldwide.  Continue reading for more on the upcoming plans for LEGOLAND New York.

As reported on Fox News Travel, John Ussher, LEGOLAND’s senior divisional director said, “we believe this location, just an hour from New York City and approximately three hours from Boston and Philadelphia, is the absolute perfect site for an entertainment brand as compelling as LEGOLAND.”

LEGOLAND New York is expected to feature over 50 rides, shows, and attractions as well as a 250+ room LEGOLAND Hotel.  The LEGOLAND Hotels in California and Florida have been huge hits with families with their oversized themed suites and interactive features.

LEGOLAND California

There are currently a number of LEGO attractions in the New York City metropolitan area including a LEGO store in the Flatiron district of NYC (now offering LEGO themed birthday parties), a LEGOLAND Discovery Center indoor recreational complex in Westchester, and numerous LEGO exhibits and events throughout the year.

Based on LEGOLAND California and Florida, officials expect LEGOLAND New York could draw between 1.5 million and 2.5 million visitors a year.  However, the other two U.S. LEGOLAND resorts are based in warmer climates that do not have to deal with New York winters.  No word on whether LEGOLAND New York would be open as a year-round destination.  Nearby Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania, 3 hours from the proposed LEGOLAND New York site, is closed a third of the year from the beginning of January until the end of April.

LEGOLAND theme parks are “dedicated to families with children between the ages of 2 and 12.”  Although I’ve found that even a group of jaded New York college kids can still have fun at LEGOLAND Florida.

In addition to rides, all LEGOLAND parks include extensive Miniland displays of notable area attractions and landmarks.  Both LEGOLAND Florida and California also have dedicated LEGO Star Wars areas with scenes from the films constructed out of the plastic bricks.

If all plans are approved, LEGOLAND New York could open in 2019.  For more family travel news, reviews, and trip reports, be sure to follow Adventures by Daddy on instagramtwitter and “like” our facebook page too.
