STAR WARS ROGUE ONE Characters Revealed

A few weeks ago Lucasfilm, Ltd. shared the first details of the rogues’ gallery of characters for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.  Click here for Anthony Breznican’s exclusive article in EW.  Now, they’ve shared the images with the rest of the world along with a few more details.  Here’s what we’ve learned about the STAR WARS ROGUE ONE characters who come together to steal the plans for the Death Star.  “May the Force be with Us…”

From the first reveal at the 2015 D23 Expo (pictured above), we knew that the ROGUE ONE characters would make up an ensemble cast in the classic war movie genre like The Dirty Dozen.  Now we learn more about this Band of Misfits.

Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones)

From the teaser trailer we know that Jyn Erso has been on her own since the age of 15 and “she rebels.”  She’s been compared to heroines such as Joan of Arc.  Jyn is different than other heroes in the Star Wars universe who are searching for their past.  Jyn Erso knows who she is and where she’s from, but she needs a cause.  Jyn Erso is extremely confident in her abilities, but impetuous, defiant, and eager to bring the battle to the Empire.

Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)

Also glimpsed in the first teaser trailer, Captain Cassian Andor joins Jyn Erso as the first two on the rebel team to steal the Death Star plans.  As the team continues to grow, Cassian and Jyn have to keep the group together.  An accomplished Alliance Intelligence Officer with combat field experience Captain Cassian Andor commands respect from his rebel troops with his ability to keep a cool head under fire and complete his missions with minimal resources.  Cassian’s best friend is K-2SO, and the former Imperial droid may be the only true friend he has the rebellion.

K-2SO (Alan Tudyk)

A 7 foot 1 inch, black, Imperial droid described by Alan Tudyk as his “inner person.” K2 was reprogrammed by Cassian and received a complete data wipe leaving the droid “not quite all there.”  K-2SO says whatever he thinks including those bits that are very honest and unsettling.

Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed)

Bodhi Rook is a pilot from the Empire occupied planet of Jedha.  He wears an Imperial patch and worked for the Empire, but did not agree with everthing the Empire stands for.  Over the course of his work for the Empire, Bodhi is forced to do things that cause him to question the Empire more and more.  Bodhi has strong piloting and technical skills that he will put to use for the Rebellion.

Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen)

A blind warrior who also lives on the planet Jedha.  He believes in the power of the Force, and is extremely good friends with Baze Malbus.  Chirrut Imwe is a fierce fighter who’s deeply spiritual belief in the Force helps him overcome his disability.  Though he lacks Force abilities, the warrior monk has rigorously honed his body through intense physical and mental discipline.

Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen)

The harsh reality of his Imperial occupied home world has hardened Baze Malbus into a pragmatic soldier and a crack shot with his repeater cannon.  Played by Jiang Wen. a Chinese actor from Beijing.  Wen describes Baze as having “a gun… a huge gun, and is very good friends with Chirrut Imwe.”  Baze does not believe in the Force, but pretends to go along with it because of his close friendship with Chirrut.  Jiang Wen describes Chirrut as a “thinker” and Baze as a “do-er.”  Baze has a bravado that provides a marked contrast to the spiritual centeredness of his best friend and moral compass Chirrut Imwe.

Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker)

A character originally developed by George Lucas that first appeared in the animated STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS series.  Saw Gerrera hails from the planet Onderon, and fought for its freedom alongside his sister Steela Gerrera.  He’s a guerrilla fighter who has struggled against the Empire for years, and will use any means necessary to achieve his mission.

Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen)

Star Wars loves its father issue, and Mads Mikkelsen plays Jyn Erso’s estranged father Galen Erso.  He’s a scientist that at one point invented something so beautiful and fantastic it might change the Universe.  Lots of secrecy still surrounds Galen Erso, and not much can be said without spoiling the plot of ROGUE ONE.

Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)

As director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial military, Orson Krennic is obsessed with the completion of the long-delayed Death Star project.  A cruel but brilliant man, Krennic has staked his reputation on the delivery of the functional battle station to the Emperor.  Director Orson Krennic is a different kind of Imperial villain.  He’s smarter, more inventive, charismatic, and better looking (according to Ben Mendelsohn) than his predecessors.  Krennic leads the squad of black-clad Deathtroopers, but ultimately must report to the Emperor.

Darth Vader

Darth Vader has a definite presence as one of the ROGUE ONE characters.  The classic Star Wars villain is once again voiced by James Earl Jones, but little details were given as to how large a role Vader plays in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.
