40 Years of Star Wars – 11:00 am Galaxy Stage

Wow, oh wow, it’s going to be hard to top the “40 Years of Star Wars” panel.  Seeing Star Wars with my family in 1977 was one of my first movie experiences, and there was no way I would miss this marquee Celebration event.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy brought out Warwick Davis to host, and Davis quickly brought out “The Maker” himself, George Lucas.

George told his stories, and then a litany of Star Wars luminaries trotted across the stage including Star Wars: Clone Wars and Rebels producer Dave Filoni, Ian McDiarmid, and Hayden Christensen making his first appearance since 2002.  Christensen was greeted by a standing ovation from the packed house.

More original trilogy stars followed including Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and Peter Mayhew.  Mark Hamill came out next, and then… surprise… Harrison Ford finally graced the Star Wars Celebration stage.

However, there was one piece missing, and, of course, that was the passing of Carrie Fisher.  George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy shared their memories of Carrie, followed by her daughter Billie Lourd.  Sporting a Leia-inspired dress, Lourd elaborated on the authenticity of her mother, and recited the message her mom, Leia, left in the R2 unit.

And when the emotions started to get too much, the curtains opened to reveal John Williams conducting the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra LIVE – Leia’s theme, the Star Wars theme, and wrapping with the Imperial March.

As we exited the Galaxy Stage, everyone received a special tribute poster of Carrie Fisher, #CarrieOn.

Star Wars Celebration Show Floor

After the 40 Years of Star Wars panel, I needed a chance to catch my breath.  So I wandered the show floor to get a lay of the land.  I met a number of friends in real life I had only interacted with online before, and it was wonderful to connect in person.  One of my favorite areas on the show floor was the photo ops with the Rebel Legion costuming group.

Doug Chiang: The Production Design of Rogue One – 4:00pm Behind the Scenes Stage

Doug Chiang serves as executive creative director of Lucasfilm, is a Star Wars fan, and has worked on Star Wars for over 20 years.  Chiang currently oversees the art designs for all new Star Wars franchise developments including films, theme parks, games, and new media. He was co-production designer on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  The hour whisked by as he discussed meeting Ralph McQuarrie and the influence on Chiang’s design process.

Through a series of slides, Chiang led the audience through the design process of characters, locations, and sets.  It was a fascinating look at how the films come to life, and the amount of research (and artwork) that goes into creating the worlds we see and their inhabitants.

Disney Parks & Star Wars Merchandise – 5:30 pm Behind the Scenes Stage

Last panel of the day for me at Star Wars Celebration was Disney Parks and Star Wars Merchandise.  The panelists discussed the Disney/Star Wars merchandise at Celebration, exclusives for Galactic Nights, plans for “May the 4th,” and more.

Ashley Eckstein came out and shared looks of new Her Universe designs, including Disney Parks specific creations inspired by the Haunted Mansion.

Fangirls Going Rogue – 3:00 pm Podcast Stage

I’m curious to catch the Fangirls Tricia Barr, Teresa Delgado, Sarah Woloski, and Sandra Choute on the podcast stage. I’m a regular listener of Sarah Woloski’s other podcast, Skywalking Through Neverland, so I’m curious to hear her in this other venue.

Star Wars: Galactic Nights 8:30pm – 12:00am Disney’s Hollywood Studios

During 2010’s Star Wars Celebration V, Walt Disney World held a party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  It was a “last chance” to ride the original version of Star Tours before the ride went off-line to become “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.”  This Disney party was one of my favorite parts of 2010’s Star Wars Celebration, and I wouldn’t miss Galactic Nights.

Star Wars Galactic Nights definitely did not disappoint.

STAR WARS REBELS Season Four Sneak Peek – 11:00am Galaxy Stage

Saturday morning is cartoon time, right?  Therefore, Saturday at Celebration was all about Disney XD’s STAR WARS REBELS.  Executive Producer Dave Filoni and the cast shared a sneak peek of the fourth season of the show, and revealed Star Wars legend Warwick Davis would join the voice cast as Rukh the bodyguard for Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The excitement turned bittersweet as Dave Filoni announced Season 4 of STAR WARS REBELS would be the conclusion of the series.  Members of the cast were visibly moved, and Tiya Sircar (Sabine) could not hold back tears on stage.

Star Wars and Disney Parks: A Galaxy in the Making – 4:30pm Galaxy Stage

Star Wars fans couldn’t wait to hear about the progress of “Star Wars Land” opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland in 2019.  But first, Walt Disney Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) discussed the 30 year history and development of Star Tours, and revealed a new scene from STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI would be added to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.  Get ready to head to the planet, Crait.

Next, Disney Imagineers and Lucasfilm producers Wendy Anderson, Doug Chiang, Scott Trowbridge, Pablo Hildalgo, Asa Kalama, and Chris Beatty were all brought on stage to discuss the development of the new Star Wars Lands.  They promised to take us to a location we’ve never visited before to put us into the story of Star Wars.  Guests will be able to interact with characters, be a part of the story, and our actions and choices will have consequences.  It will be like walking into a role-playing game inside the Star Wars Universe.  Asa Kalama promised, “this is not a representation of Star Wars, this IS Star Wars!”
