The Great LEGO Race VR Roller Coaster NOW OPEN at Legoland Florida Resort

Today, LEGOLAND Florida Resort unveiled The Great LEGO Race Virtual Reality (VR) Roller Coaster for families. The ride is a “Wild Mouse”-style roller coaster where riders at least 6 years old and 48 inches tall (1.21m) can wear optional VR headsets to experience the point-of-view of a LEGO minifigure race car driver in an original story created exclusively for LEGOLAND theme parks.

Developed under the supervision of Merlin Magic Making, the global creative and delivery division of LEGOLAND Florida Resort parent company Merlin Entertainments Group, The Great LEGO Race will transform the existing Project X roller coaster into a high-octane, virtual reality (VR) experience that puts guests in the driver’s seat for a rollicking race against a colorful lineup of LEGO minifigure characters.

My only experience so far with VR and Roller Coasters is Kraken Unleashed at SeaWorld Orlando. That coaster was well done, but when it came to the operations and capacity of the attraction I worried. So, I went in with low expectations, but was excited to see LEGOLAND Florida for the first time. In terms of how they handle the VR, I have nothing to say except wonderful! They take you aside and explain the VR helmets (how they work, how to set it up, and what to do if they fail during the ride.) Much better than the handling of VR at SeaWorld where it takes ten minutes to dispatch one vehicle.

Wearing optional VR headsets, riders will experience the action from every direction while riding the roller coaster – up, down, forward, backward and all points in between – in a dazzling environment where everything is made of LEGO bricks.

However, The Great LEGO Race did seem to have problems and was not running quickly in terms of a roller coaster. This is an ongoing problem with VR Roller Coasters.  The problem will continue until the day when a theme park decides to create a VR coaster with a much simpler headset and pass those headsets out prior to boarding the vehicle (e.g like what LEGOLAND was doing today.)

The ride itself is very tame, similar to that of Goofy’s Sky School at Disney California Adventure, but more smooth (for some portions.) The visuals through the VR helmet are stunning! They flow perfectly with the drops and turns on the coaster.

Overall, the experience is incredible and I am excited to ride this again one day. However, Legoland Operations need to figure out a better process and find quicker dispatch times for this ride while its popular, which I can assume will be for years to come. Below is video coverage of the ride itself and the grand opening moment so be sure to check that out.
